More Than a Snack: Lunchfilm

The short form used to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the film world -- it couldn't get no respect. Nowadays shorts programs are amazingly popular, a reflection less of chronic ADD than the dawning realization that no other night at the movies offers so much concentrated creativity.

The newest entry among the myriad touring programs (Ann Arbor, Microcinema, The Animation Show, etc.) is CineVegas programmer Mike Plante's Lunchfilm: Film Before Food. Like so many marvelous ideas, it began as a fluke. A filmmaker pal was short of dough, so Plante picked up the bill. The other fellow offered the standard make-good -- he'd get the check next time -- but Plante had a brainstorm: Pay back the "debt" by making a film for the same cost. The concept soon turned into regular commissions, now topping 50, with the programmer scratching out terms and themes over a midday bite with the designated filmmaker.

Shorts used to be viewed as the province of students and amateurs, the apprentices who weren't ready for prime time (that is, features). The Lunchfilm lineup boasts several mid-career experimental and nonfiction filmmakers, so I wasn't expecting half-baked dreck but a cascade of no-budget, handmade work akin to scrapbook art: low on materials and high on inspiration. There are a few pieces like that, notably Kelly Sears's mysterious, moody Jean, which revisits movie star Jean Seberg's dismal end through newspaper-style snippets of text laid over tarot illustrations.

But most of the films are so ambitious and accomplished that they defy any sense of constraints, financial or otherwise. The pick of the litter might be Braden King's intimate black-and-white Home Movie, co-written with and starring Mimi Visser as an exhausted, devoted Swedish mother who may be facing the loss of her young sons in a custody battle. Another highlight is local filmmaker Sam Green's wonderful and strangely moving Clear Glasses, which amplifies the connection he made with political activist-turned-fugitive-turned teacher Mark Rudd in the course of making his Oscar-nominated documentary The Weather Underground.

Another S.F. icon, George Kuchar, contributes one of his deceptively complex video travelogues, The Celluloid Cavalcade, a seemingly random compilation that begins in Atlanta (where he was touted with a couple of shows at Emory University) and ends up flitting around more familiar environs from the S.F. Art Institute (or Art Asylum, as Kuchar refers to his teaching home in his hilariously deadpan narration) to the S.F. International Film Festival's opening night party to a show by one-time local Martha Colburn at the New Nothing Cinema. Kuchar's charming, generous work may seem tossed off to the uninitiated, but there's an undercurrent of Hollywood sendup and monster-movie surrealism on the soundtrack that nudges his films into unexpected psychological territory.

The aforementioned Martha Colburn is represented by a stunning piece of cut-out animation, Myth Wars, that conflates religion, drug addiction and colonial history into a dizzying diorama. A young filmmaker named Mike Gibisser turns in an artful split-screen, black-and-white vignette of his grandmother entitled Springtime Wound Motor, a reference to the spring-loaded camera he employed. And Bobcat Goldthwaite utilizes old home movies -- his? who knows -- of children to satirize DVD commentary tracks, child stardom and sibling rivalries.

If it's not already clear, Lunchfilm: Film before Food draws on an incredible array of styles and genres, and (with only a couple of exceptions) is pure pleasure from start to finish. Jonathan Marlow of San Francisco Cinematheque saw the program at Sundance in January and asked Plante if a touring program was in the works; it turns out the two-and-a-quarter-hour S.F. show will be the first stop. Plante will be on hand, as well as Green and Kuchar, perhaps. Show some respect.

A quick reminder what Lunchfilm is - it started by accident, a filmmaker didn't have cash on him at lunch because he puts everything he has into his films. I bought lunch. Instead of buying me a whole lunch in return, why not make a film for that money he would have spent instead? Film before food. We made some rules on a napkin, since we were talking about film during the lunch, things we liked or didn't like, so the napkin reflected what was on our minds.

All in the spirit of fun but it hopefully shows others how easy it is to help a filmmaker out. All of these artists would keep working regardless. But maybe it was an inspiration or extra bump for him/her to make something. Maybe it was a chance to try something different, per the rules. Or the challenge - you talk about what's right and wrong in film - go make one.

At the very least, a lunch funded a short film. You can probably afford lunch or a little more. So feed a filmmaker today.

Jim Finn (b. St. Louis, 1968) uses humor and historical fiction to examine ideology, capitalism and revolutionary art practices. His work has screened at international festivals like Rotterdam, AFI and Edinburgh as well as museums and cinematheques such as the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Danish Film Institute and the Harvard Film Archive. His latest work is a trilogy of feature-length films looking at Marxist ideology. The first of these, Interkosmos, was called "a retro gust of communist utopianism" by the Village Voice and "charming and fantastic, so full of rare atmospheres" by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin. His second feature La Trinchera Luminosa del Presidente Gonzalo was put on the Village Voice's Top 10 Year in Experimental Film. And Variety called The Juche Idea "brilliant" and said all three films "upturn notions of documentary and fiction, propaganda thought, reality and restaging, and even what an 'experimental film' actually is."

Nicolas Provost (B) graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Gent, Belgium in 1994 but spent the last two years of his studies as an exchangestudent experimenting with video at the academy in Bergen, Norway. Provost spends the next 8 years in Oslo working as an illustrator, graphic designer and art director. In 1999 he starts making films again, art films, that quickly find their way to international film and visual art platforms. His work is a reflection on the grammar of cinema and the relation between visual art and the cinematic experience. His films ‘Papillon d’amour’, ‘Bataille’, ‘Oh Dear ‘ and ‘EXOTICORE’ have been awarded at prestigious festivals as among others The Sundance Film Festival. In 2003 Provost decides to make his first midlength fiction film EXOTICORE, a social critical film as a goodbye to Norway, and moves back to Belgium shortly after the shooting of the film. He is now developping a first featurefilmscript ‘The Invader’ based on the main character of EXOTICORE.

In L.A. Nick co-founded the Alpha 60 Film Collective in Echo Park, where he oversaw the production of hundreds of micro-cinema films.

Only bits and pieces here and there are known about RANDY WALKER.
After a failed tennis career, he became a journalist and did political cartoons for small weekly newspapers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Before too long, he got in the habit of using the press cameras to take pictures of Republicans walking in and out of the Elks Club. I come to find out he also worked in a genetics lab for the University of California, Riverside, sequencing the DNA of marsupials from New Guinea. Couldn’t hold down that gig, either. Got to the point where reading poetry in jail sounded pretty good, so he set out to steal a book on ethics from a bookstore and then never read it. Of course, this plan, like so many earlier plans of his, never saw the light of day. He did manage to find himself on a children’s game show called FUN HOUSE when he was eleven, though. “I lost on that, too” he told me, with a smile.

All right, there are a few things you ought to know about JENNIFER SHAININ. When I met her, she was weaving a pillow made entirely of U.S. postage stamps and talking about giant penguins in Antarctica that stand six feet tall. She also had a way of winking at you that made you smile even if you were trying not to. “I don’t think a good film needs to be shot on film,” she explained. “Just like I don’t think you have to have a professional actor in order to get a bang-up performance.” In 2002, she picked up her suitcases and left Los Angeles altogether, opting instead for the Pacific Northwest. Apparently, that’s where she grew up, just outside Mount Vernon, doing the graveyard shift on a pea combine when she was just a kid, telling her first stories into a CB radio while sitting under the Northern Lights.

Born in Miami, David Fenster began making films at the University of Florida at Gainesville. After graduation, he lived briefly in Colorado, making nature documentaries for the Discovery Channel. He then relocated to New York City to work as a freelance videographer and editor. David spent the following two years at the CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS where he received a MFA in film and video. His recent short film "Iron Worm" was commissioned by the band INTERPOL to be released around the world in conjunction with their album Antics. David's animated short "Post Apocalypse Now", which screened at the RESFEST Digital Film Festival, is currently distributed by MICROCINEMA INTERNATIONAL. He directed the feature "Trona" which played festivals worldwide.

David Nordstrom is from Wisconsin. He has been a construction worker, dishwasher, farmhand, and wedding DJ. Currently, he is a graduate student in the film school at CalArts. His thesis film, "A Sea of Troubles" will be completed this fall. In addition to his studies, David sings tenor in The Glad Rags, a barbershop quartet. His feature film acting debut was in David Fenster's "Trona."

Naomi Uman's experimental documentary films have been exhibited widely at the Sundance and Rotterdam International Film Festivals, The New York Film Festival, and the San Francisco International Film festival among others; she has also screened her work at The Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney, The Smithsonian, and Mexico City's Museo de Arte Moderno. She has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Guggenheim Foundation, The Mexico/U.S.A. Fund for Culture, and the Bank of Austria. She teaches at the Fine Art Museum in Mexico City, leading workshops in handmade filmmaking. She received an MFA in Filmmaking from CalArts in 1998. Her films include Leche (1998), Removed (1998), Mala Leche (2003) and the new Ukrainian Time Machine (2008), made from her recent travels there, and where she is currently screening the film to its subjects.

Lee Lynch grew up in a small town in Redding California, where he began making movies at the age of 13. He was born with a rare heart defect, which inspired both the title and the subject of his first feature film “Transposition of the Great Vessels.” He recently graduated from the California Institute for the Arts’ film/video program with a BFA degree. His past work, “The Bee Hive,” has screened at Rotterdam International Film Fest and the New York Underground Film Festival. Lee Lynch and Lee Anne Schmitt are currently shooting a documentary about America’s last free-roaming bison herd.

Texas-born, San Francisco exile, and confirmed tramp, Bill Daniel continues to experiment with survivalism and bricolage in his attempts to record and report on the various social margins he often finds himself in. Working without an art or film school education, he endeavors to make work that connects with an outsider audience. His work began in 1980 as he participated in and photo documented the blossoming punk rock scene in Austin, Texas. Daniel's work has received awards from the Film Arts Foundation, The Pioneer Fund, Texas Filmmaker Production Fund, the R & B Feder Charitable Foundation, and The Western States Media Alliance. He is the current Wattis Foundation artist-in-residence at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where his installation "Souls Harbor" was exhibited in Dec. In 1999 he was in-residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts where he produced several multi-projection 16mm film installations, including "Trespassing Sign" in collaboration with the late Margaret Kilgallen. In 2001 his hobo campfire installation "The Girl on the Train in the Moon" was included in "Widely Unknown" at Deitch Projects in New York. A veteran of the touring scene, Daniel has programmed, booked and exhibited several mobile art shows, including the Lucky Bum Film Tour with partner Vanessa Renwick, screening his hobo graffiti feature film, Who Is Bozo Texino? all over the world.

George Kuchar ranks among the most exciting and prolific independent videomakers working today. With his homemade Super-8 and 16mm potboilers and melodramas of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, he became legendary as one of the most distinctive and outrageous American underground filmmakers. After his 1980s transition to the video medium, he remained a master of genre manipulation and subversion, creating dozens of brilliantly edited, hilarious, observant, often diaristic tapes with an 8mm camcorder, dime-store props, not-so-special effects, and using friends as actors and the "pageant that is life" as his studio. In 1992, Kuchar received the prestigious Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists from the American Film Institute. He teaches at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he makes many of his tapes in collaboration with his students.

Sam Green received his master's degree in journalism from University of California at Berkeley, where he studied with acclaimed filmmaker Marlon Riggs. His documentary film The Rainbow Man/John 3:16 premiered at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and screened at festivals worldwide, winning the Grand Prize at the USA Film Festival in Dallas and Best Documentary awards at the Ann Arbor Film Festival and the New York and Chicago Underground Film Festivals. His short documentary Pie Fight ’69 (directed with Christian Bruno) premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, where it won an honorable mention in the shorts category, and won first prize at the Black Maria Film Festival. His first feature documentary, The Weather Underground (directed with Bill Siegel), premiered at Sundance in 2003, was nominated for an Academy Award, broadcasted on PBS and part of the 2004 Whitney Biennial. His recent short, lot 63, grave c, is part of the California Video exhibition at the Getty.

Highlight was the last show when the teenage students of the Film School San Antonio @ Harlandale showed up. They especially enjoyed $17.00 (Eileen Maxson) and $32.37 (Roger Beebe) for their Texas themes (and got the Clarkson joke), but $6.00 by Ben Coonley was their favorite. Kids blow critics out of the water every time.

In my work I utilize the language and materials of filmmaking to comment on popular culture, consumerism, politics and sexuality. My work addresses contemporary topics to express my personal anxieties and passions. Through a collage of live action (paint-on-glass) animations, found footage and documentary filmmaking techniques, my films are a disturbing and at times humorous take on popular and political culture.

Complimenting my films, I create elaborately layered collages, paintings, and installations that incorporate transparencies, recordings, and live performances. As my conceptual process grows, so follows advances in my already detailed and labor-intensive animating process. Technically, I am expanding my technique into working with multi-plane glass animation which represents a physical manifestation of my conceptually layered ideas.

Currently I am working on films that combine art historical representations and current depictions of politics to challenge our notions of truth and fantasy. As a descendent of some of America’s earliest settlers (ministers, farmers and wagon train members), I have an awareness of the repository of the guilt-haunted twisted history of the American soul. My current work draws from this perspective and personal experience to address issues such as Methamphetamine use, environmental catastrophes, and man’s relationship to nature.

Her films have screened in festivals including SXSW and the Edinburgh Film Festival. She has had a multitude of random jobs including organizing a hand-fishing contest, operating camera for a television studio during the 2000 election, and housekeeping for Patrick Swayze’s aunt. Chris Peters is from the suburbs of Los Angeles. He received MFA degrees in both Film and Fine Art in 2000 from the California Institute of the Arts, where he currently teaches. Chris produces installation, sculpture, and video work and will premiere his latest work The Last Variety Show this fall on the internet and in LA.

24 year-old Cam Archer was born and raised, and still lives today, in Santa Cruz, California. Archer’s short films have played many film festivals, including Sundance, CineVegas, Ann Arbor, Outfest and Tribeca. His short bobbycrush was also nominated for a Student Academy Award in 2004. Archer has also directed several music videos for bands like Six Organs of Admittance, Imperial Teen and The Diamond Star Halos. His first feature film, Wild Tigers I Have Known, premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and then played at New Directors/New Films and Locarno Film Festival.

Chicago-based filmmaker James Fotopoulos has made more than 90 films and videos. In 1998 he formed the production company Fantasma Inc. His work has been screened at many national and international venues, including The Walker Art Center, The Andy Warhol Museum, Anthology Film Archives, The New York Underground Film Festival, The Rotterdam International Film Festival, and many others. He recently participated in both the exhibition and film screening of the 2004 Whitney Biennial and has been written about and interviewed in several publications. In 2003 Facets Video released his first three features on DVD.
